Melbourne Seaplanes has been operating in Williamstown since 1997, after a lengthy process of gaining approvals from relevant authorities.
Unbeknown to many, seaplanes were operating in Williamstown as far back as the 1930s’ and during World War 11 there were permanent moorings set up by the Harbour Trust for Catalina flying boats. After the war seaplanes use dropped off as bigger landbased aircraft took over from expensive to operate seaplanes.
Melbourne Seaplanes charter is to revive seaplane flying in
Williamstown to allow Australians and overseas tourists the opportunity to view our great city skyline and surrounding bays and coastal beaches from the air. Departing from a purpose built pontoon right in Williamstown and using Hobson Bay waters as our airfield.
Melbourne Seaplanes is operated by local husband and wife team, Rod & Leonie Gunther. Rod with over 27 years flying experience is chief Pilot taking care of flying and training while Leonie manages the terminal and bookings.
Rod says seaplane flying is a combination of boating and flying, two of his life long passions and the opportunity to share this with other people is fantastic.
Over the years Melbourne Seaplanes has built up and improved the facilities for our customers and introduced different services to cater for all kinds of experiences.
The aircraft used are designed in the factory to have float landing gear fitted. They feature a powerful 520 cubic inch (81/2 litre) motor producing 300 horsepower or 224 kw. Which allows exceptional performance. Four to five passengers depending on weight can be carried in comfort to view our magnificent bays and coastal waterway. Their good handling and excellent reliability have made these aircraft the bench mark for this type of operation.
Melbourne Seaplanes office is situated at 126c Nelson Place
Williamstown and flights commence at 9.00am. Bookings are preferable. The seaplane flights depart from a purpose built floating marina situated on the water front off Commonwealth Reserve just a short walk from our office.
Many different flights are offered and they can also tailor you a special romantic flight with fly/dine packages to Sorrento/Queenscliff, Geelong or picnics on beautiful secluded beaches.
